3.5.3 What goes into the MIDI output?
Supported in MIDI
The following items of notation are reflected in the MIDI output:
- Pitches
- Microtones (See Accidentals. Rendering needs a
player that supports pitch bend.)
- Chords entered as chord names
- Rhythms entered as note durations, including tuplets
- Tremolos entered without ‘
:[number]’
- Ties
- Dynamic marks
- Crescendi, decrescendi over multiple notes
- Tempo changes entered with a tempo marking
- Lyrics
- Simple articulations: staccato, staccatissimo, accent, marcato, portato
- Breath marks
There is a script that adds the following items; see
The Articulate script:
- Slurs and phrasing slurs
- Ornaments (mordents, trills, turns, etc.)
- Rallentando, accelerando, ritard, and a tempo
Unsupported in MIDI
The following items of notation have no effect on the MIDI output,
even if you use The Articulate script:
- Rhythms entered as annotations, e.g. swing
- Tempo changes entered as annotations with no tempo marking
- Fermatas
- Other articulations
- Crescendi, decrescendi over a single note
- Tremolos entered with ‘
:[number]’
- Figured bass
- Microtonal chords
- Glissandi, falls and doits
